There are things we never forget—like a toothbrush, socks, or slippers. But there are also other items that can make your hospital stay with your child just a little more pleasant.
Here are 5 tips our parents have found helpful—we hope they’ll help you too:
Distractions
Bring toys, books, a tablet with games or movies, bubbles, playdough, stickers—anything that can entertain your child and shift their attention away from upcoming procedures.
A Favorite Item
Pack your child’s favorite blanket, stuffed animal, pillow, spoon, or any other familiar item that provides comfort and a sense of security. It may seem small, but it makes a big difference!
Spare Clothes
Even if everyone hopes your hospital stay will be short, it’s a good idea to have a few extra clothes. A clean, fresh set of pajamas after surgery can gently reinforce the feeling that a tough moment has passed—and it's time to move forward.
Noise Soothers
Listening to music is a great way to pass time, reduce fear, and distract from what’s happening. It can also help block out crying, beeping machines, and other unpleasant hospital sounds.
A Treat
Your child may not be allowed to eat everything they like—especially before surgery—but once they can, a favorite snack, piece of fruit, or juice box can bring a lot of joy and a comforting sense of normalcy. The same goes for parents!
What brings you comfort when you’re not feeling well? A favorite item or a snack that always cheers you up? ;-)
