The Distraction Cards were developed as a practical tool for working with children. They help initiate communication, provide distraction during difficult moments, support calming techniques, and even assess pain intensity.
They are designed for doctors, nurses, psychologists, therapists, child life specialists, and other caregivers who are looking for effective and accessible ways to interact with children in various settings—especially in hospitals or when working with children with complex needs.
The beautiful illustrations and design were created by Michael Vácha, and the production was made possible thanks to the financial support of the Vlček Family Foundation.
What can the cards do?
The Distraction Cards are a set of seven double-sided cards, each intended for a different purpose or type of interaction with a child:
Search & Story Cards: Support focus, concentration, and distraction through play. Suitable for children of various ages, with adjustable difficulty and themes.
The Lighthouse: Encourages children to engage with their surroundings through playful exploration.
Pain & Emotion Scales: A tool for assessing a child’s pain intensity. Helps children point to or express how they feel.
Yes–No Card: Ideal for children who cannot or do not wish to speak. Enables simple and clear communication.
Black-and-White Cards: Designed for visual stimulation and play, especially for infants or children with limited color perception.
Breathing Card: Helps calm a child during stressful moments using a simple breathing exercise.
